Meet Sam Weyenberg, Project Manager

Sam recently joined the Energenecs team as a project manager for water and wastewater process-based projects. We asked Sam a few questions about his job at Energenecs.

How did you get into the water and wastewater industry?

Basically, this is my first job out of college. I graduated from UW-Platteville with a degree in mechanical engineering. I really enjoyed studying fluid dynamics—it was always an interesting topic. While in college, I worked as a project engineer in a paper mill which introduced me to equipment and systems similar to what I work on currently. I apply those concepts working with lift stations, wastewater systems, biogas equipment, and more.

What type of projects are you working on now?

I’m a process project manager, so I’m responsible for overseeing various projects including lift stations, where we provide the concrete structures, pumps, and piping, our Groth Biogas equipment and chemical feed systems. Any project involving process equipment typically falls under my scope.

That sounds like a lot to manage, how do you keep track of it all?

It can definitely be a lot, but I’m fortunate to have a great team to support me. I work closely with our electrical project managers, who handle control panel design for my projects. Our service team is also highly knowledgeable and always ready to assist out in the field, which makes a big difference. I’ve also learned a lot from the Groth Biogas team, they are very knowledgeable when I have questions.

What does a typical day look like for you?

There’s really no such thing as a typical day, but some recurring tasks include responding to emails from customers and colleagues, providing engineering support, and visiting project sites. Site visits could be pre-startup, where I assess project requirements, or during startup, to ensure everything runs smoothly. I’m also responsible for ensuring equipment delivery and overseeing projects from start to finish. It’s definitely a dynamic role!

It sounds like you’re not at a desk all day!

That’s true, I’m not always at my desk! On average, I manage about 35 projects at a time. These range from smaller parts orders, which are pretty straightforward, to more complex systems like lift stations that involve design work and more detailed planning. I’m primarily in the office, but about one day a week, I’ll be out on a site visit.

Are you from Saukville?

No, I moved to Port Washington for this job. I’m originally from Greenville, a small town near Appleton in the Fox Valley area. I went to Hortonville High School before heading to college.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I enjoy anything outdoors—hiking, golfing, and playing recreational sports or yard games with friends. I also like gaming and volunteering when I have the time.

Do you have favorite hiking spots?

Around here, I’m still exploring, but my favorite hikes have always been out west. I love hiking in the Rocky Mountains and Oregon—there are some breathtaking trails out there.
