What SCADA Users Need to Know about Windows 10

Upgrading from Windows 10 while running a SCADA system requires careful consideration of security, compatibility, and system stability. Windows 11 was first released in 2021. As of February 2025, the latest version is Windows 11, version 24H2 (Windows 11 2024 Update).

Why Upgrade to Windows 11?

End of Support for Windows 10

Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. After this date, no security updates will be released, leaving SCADA systems vulnerable to cyber threats. If your SCADA system is network-connected, the lack of security updates significantly increases the risk of malware and ransomware attacks.

Enhanced Security & Stability

Windows 11 includes advanced security features, such as TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and improved ransomware protection. Windows 10 has known vulnerabilities that newer OS versions address with critical patches and updates.

Software & Hardware Compatibility

As SCADA software vendors update their platforms for newer Windows versions, staying on Windows 10 may lead to compatibility issues. Additionally, new hardware, drivers, and third-party integrations may stop supporting Windows 10.

Performance Improvements

Windows 11 optimizes resource allocation and system performance, leading to better responsiveness and stability for SCADA applications.

How to Check Your Windows Version

Type “winver” in the Windows search bar.
Press Enter to view your Windows version details.

Should You Upgrade Now?

We typically do not recommend updating Windows 10 to Windows 11 until your SCADA software licenses have been updated to the latest version, ensuring full compatibility with Windows 11.
